“It’s been a long time,” read the invitation for Courrèges’ runway. After a nearly 13 year absence, Courrèges made their big comeback on the catwalk, taking care to highlight the avant-garde spirit that originally forged their reputation. Onstage in a vast white amphitheater, located in the basement of Paris’ Opéra Bastille, Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant made a highly acclaimed début. Putting aside their Copernic line to fully concentrate on André Courrèges’ namesake brand, they made the wise decision of going back to basics, creating clothing out of “heavy” fabrics to proceed to movement.
That’s how the duo ended up presenting a collection composed of 15 styles, released in 15 different colors and 15 different fabrics… 225 possibilities in all! But Courrèges’ iconic pieces are getting a twist in 2016: the vinyl miniskirt with a rumpled look espouses or rather envelops the waist while the industrial-style silver buttoning brings the style up to the next level. This is clearly the Copernic touch: surprising and graphic buttons. This is a promise of stylish simplicity.
