Lexus ROV: A Hydrogen-Powered Off-Road Concept

Lexus, which is known for its high-end hybrid models, is making the transition to 100% electric. The Japanese firm is also exploring other horizons, including hydrogen. Lexus is delivering to us today a sketch of the all-terrain vehicle of tomorrow, although it is not a car per se, but a buggy.

“ROV” is an acronym standing for “Recreational Off-highway Vehicle”. The Concept ROV is 3.12 meters long, 1.73 meters wide and 1.80 meters high. It comes in the form of a buggy with a light body, fixed on a tubular frame, and with a visible suspension, a roll bar, and tires suitable for off-road use.

It is a two-seater model where the occupants are comfortably seated. The cockpit is fitted with bucket seats with four-point harnesses, and a driving position with a single counter offering information useful for progress on the roads.

Under the hood, we find an engine with a displacement of 1.0 liter, running on hydrogen from a high pressure tank and delivered via a direct injection system. Lexus gave no indication regarding performance, but the brand specifies that the rapid combustion of hydrogen “significantly increases the torque of the engine which also offers the same sound sensations as a petrol engine”, while producing emissions of
Almost zero CO2.

“The Lexus ROV Concept is our response to the growing passion of luxury market customers for outdoor activities and adventure,” said Spiros Fotinos, manager of Lexus Europe. “As a concept, it merges our desire to develop ‘lifestyle’ products while pursuing our continuous search for new technologies that contribute to carbon neutrality. This concept car is not only exciting to drive, but on top of that it almost delivers. zero emissions thanks to its hydrogen engine. ”

There is little chance that this concept will see the light of day, as this device is not necessarily in the DNA of the Japanese firm. In fact, the Lexus ROV confirms the brand’s commitment to “perpetuate the pleasure of driving in a low-carbon society based on responsible mobility”.
