Is there any legend more contemporary than that of Alexander McQueen? The answer seems obvious; it’s no doubt for this reason that Sarah Burton is pursuing her exploration of McQueen’s signature for the Spring/Summer 2017 season. Luxury that only looks like itself: this is how one could define the line developed by Alexander McQueen during his lifetime. Highly cultivated and well-reflected, his lines brush up against ingeniousness to express something. Yes, Alexander McQueen was an artist who made fashion. Always at the limits of what haute couture could be, McQueen’s creations played with shapes and approaches to characterize a sentiment, an emotion, or sometimes an engagement.
And so Sarah Burton pursues her exploration of McQueen’s heritage – a romantic spectacle, her approach to Spring/Summer 2017 makes work with lace and this lost legacy of the UK something very precious indeed. As a starting point, Burton chose the wild and magical landscapes of the Shetland Islands. Alexander McQueen also took inspiration from Scotland many times… Unsurprisingly, it’s a dress made of lace fabric and feathery wool that captured all the attention at the runway – topped off by a neo-gothic corset, the piece becomes even more current when it mixes couture and counterculture. This is pure McQueen.
