Gucci manufactured its first bags in 1921. While the label may have become a master in the creation of it-bags, its Bamboo style is still one of its most emblematic creations. Released in an era where materials like leather were rationed, this model was fashioned in a robust Tuscan boar skin, lined with two pockets that hid a tiny mirror. The bag quickly conquered the brand’s friends and customers; from the greatest stars of Hollywood to the royal family of Monaco, the Bamboo bag had the world’s elegants convinced. Taken from the Prefall 2013 collection, the new Bamboo line is set to achieve the same plaudits. Made by hand, this new interpretation is aiming for a sophistication that’s a bit further removed from the pure Gucci tradition.

By working with bamboo again, a main component in Gucci’s DNA used by the Florentine brand’s artisans since 1947, the Bamboo Shopper signals a new style that responds to the subtly elegant demands of modern silhouettes, attempting to bring the practical considerations of daily life to the essence of feminine elegance. And so, it’s a large leather tote bag made of either pony leather with leopard print or snakeskin that Frida Giannini is signing off on. Two 11 cm bamboo handles give it a touch of Gucci chic; the bag is also equipped with a leather shoulder strap for a more urban approach. The subtle grab-bag of colors are just as charming as they are significant to Gucci: dark blue, black, jade, brick red, and light blue, with its finishings in a thin and light gold for a more Made in Italy look. The Bamboo Shopper is definitely going to be one of this fall’s it-bags; it’s already been adopted by BeyoncĂ© and brought to the next level in its ad campaign by Charlotte Casiraghi. But take note: the dark blue style is only available online.
