Bernardaud x Opinel

Bernardaud x Opinel

When two icons of French craftsmanship meet, the result can only be exceptional. This year, Bernardaud, master of porcelain since 1863, and Opinel, renowned knife manufacturer since 1890, have joined forces to create a unique table knife collection: Kintsugi.

Bernardaud x Opinel Design Philosophy

Inspired by Japanese aesthetics, this Bernardaud x Opinel collaboration reimagines the French art of table setting, balancing tradition and innovation. The term Kintsugi thus refers to an ancient Japanese technique that involves repairing broken objects by highlighting the cracks with gold powder, thereby enhancing their flaws to create unique pieces.

In the Bernardaud x Opinel collection, this philosophy comes to life in the form of knives where the porcelain handle is delicately decorated with motifs inspired by Kintsugi. These golden patterns extend onto the stainless steel blade, creating a visual and poetic continuity, as if each element was meticulously restored. The artist Sarkis envisioned this refined design, paying tribute to resilience and the art of transforming imperfections into pure beauty.

The combination of steel and porcelain posed a true technical challenge for both houses. Several months of research and testing were required to ensure a perfect union between the porcelain handle and stainless steel blade, guaranteeing both robustness and elegance. This marriage of materials embodies the complementarity between the delicacy of Bernardaud and the functionality of Opinel, offering an exceptional object that is both beautiful and practical.

The collection is available in five finishes: Kintsugi Charbon (silver, gold, or black blade) and Kintsugi Or (gold or silver blade). The handle is available in white or black glazed porcelain, adorned with 24-carat gold, giving each knife a sophisticated allure that integrates perfectly with the most refined tables. The mirror finish on the blade adds a touch of modernity, enhancing the object while highlighting its timeless character.

The Kintsugi table knives are available in limited editions at Bernardaud boutiques, on the brand’s official website, as well as at Opinel points of sale. Presented in sets of two, they cater to collectors and lovers of fine tableware who wish to add a unique piece to their gatherings, a testament to the excellence of French craftsmanship!
