New York-based brand Ralph Lauren first created their iconic Ricky bag in 2005. Given the same name as Ralph Lauren’s wife and muse – writer, artist and photographer Ricky Lauren – the original style was inspired by equestrian panniers of the 19th century. And now this year, the label is rereleasing it in a collection that’s a far cry from its previous leathergoods classics; the Soft Ricky bag is available in lively and atypical colors that render it even cooler. Fashioned on wood, sculpted in supple veal leather, this bag’s unique look necessitates 12 hours of work along with a swatch of 13 color choices. The Soft Ricky preserves the lightness that gave the original all its charm, like a successful union between modernity and chic. Conceived to be carried open for a messy but distinguished look, Ralph Lauren is proving that he’s still able to bring luxury tinged with uncompromising casualness to life.
In a bolder and younger version, the brand is signing off on two models that are slightly smaller than the original. Instead of 33 centimeters, the bag only measures 27. It preserves all the suave of its predecessor, made of leather of an incomparable quality, as well as all the delicateness of its conception. Custom-made in Italy, each piece is measured, cut, and hand sewn before being stamped with the famous RL logo. But just for the Parisian concept store, the Soft Ricky is overlaid with a younger and less structured look. In Colette’s signature colors, it’s also been touched up with white or black leather that contrasts with the lateral gussets that are covered in Colette’s iconic blue. On the inside, the lining is bedaubed in the same harsh blue. But here’s the catch: these two styles will only be on sale from October 7th to the 12th at Colette, during which time they’ll also be featured in the window displays.
