“This collection is under the guise of freshness both of materials and techniques.” For spring 2014, Bottega Veneta is exploring what was already uncovered by the Musée d’Orsay exhibit “Impressionism and Fashion”. From the masters of the “salon des refusés”, Tomas Maier borrows all the rigor and colors of 19th-century womenswear. The result: the same process as that of the Impressionists seems to be brought to the fabric. The couturier is aiming for new possibilities in the composition of materials and volumes. This singular character, both tenderly feminine and modern, brings together colors and a plurality of proportions. The looks all contain a healthy dose of BV DNA: elegance, discretion, and distinction are personified in supple braided shoes that, with a touch of intrecciato, bring the look into a more masculine repertoire. To determine the height of the heel, Tomas Maier looked to the volumes and proportions of each look.

“When your initials are enough” is the label’s motto. And, while there may not be any prints this year, it’s only to better experiment with embroidery and patchwork techniques as well as abstract motifs. Imbued with individuality and self-assurance, the Bottega Veneta woman will be able to trace the roots of her high-waist belted dresses to Monet. Look # 22 insists on a clearly binary palette for next season: with salmony ocher shades reminiscent of the façades of palaces in Rome, the mid-length dress is finely pleated. It’s a cascade of silk with accordion pleats where mohair fringes play with the dendrite technique. The color is an evanescently neutral one, with a refinement and modesty characteristic of a new luxury that the brand has been working with ever since its creation in 1966 in Vicence, in Northeast Italy.
