Let’s start with the name, the name that belongs to both a Mulberry purse and to Elizabeth Woolridge Grant: Lana Del Rey. A mix of Lana Turner, Hollywood actress in the 40s and 50s, mythic glamour icon, and the 1954 Chevy Delray, a car that symbolizes the American Dream. The 2011 Lana Del Rey is a singer who’s unique style incorporates glamour both past and present, or as she describes herself, a “self-styled gangsta Nancy Sinatra”. So what exactly is a Lana Del Rey? It’s a grimace that’s a tad pouty, a suave voice, smooth, trailing, that gets you deliciously nostalgic. It’s a head of hair, wavy as a mermaid’s.

Until now, there’s been nothing much to see at Mulberry. But hold on a second… Elizabeth built herself up like Legos to become little by little the Lana that we know and love today. Just like Mulberry, who’s built itself up through the women it dedicates its handbags to. After Alexa Chung in 2010, another piece has been added to the puzzle: the Del Rey.

Emma Hill, Mulberry’s creative director, claims to “…love Lana’s nostalgic references to bygone glamour and the fact that her look is retrospective yet so modern. This inspired us to create a bag that was timeless, refined and elegant, yet with a beautiful practicality that would suit any woman”. This is Lana’s dream immortalized in handbag form; a legendary piece for the girl that forged her own destiny. Now it’s your turn to dream!
