In the underbelly of the Louvre, inside the Pavillon de l’Horloge beside vestiges of medieval Paris, Louis Vuitton introduced a special collection. For Spring/Summer 2018, Nicolas Ghasquière took references from royal costumes of the 18th century and turned them into the essence of Louis Vuitton style. This year is particularly rich in historical references for the brand, notably with the opening of a gargantuan new boutique on the Place Vendôme, where Louis Vuitton’s adventure first began. With this collection, the manufacturer is actually highlighting like never before its historical links to France, Paris, and its past empire.

One of the key pieces in this collection, a frock coat made entirely of brocade, sums up all the magnificence of Louis Vuitton, but first and foremost Ghesquière’s genius when it comes to linking past fashion with the style of the present. “It was about exploring a way of incorporating costumes into contemporary fashion, in an urban wardrobe. It’s an anachronism with a touch of romanticism. I think we all need that right now,” explained the creative director. This piece is indeed a bit crazy! In a pale pink metallic brocade, made of embroidered silk, the coat seems to be encrusted with sublime embroideries. This is a powerful piece that’s sufficient in and of itself and avoids the tapestry effect as well.

By awakening pieces so near and dear to the history of France, Nicolas Ghesquière is bringing the very definition of a perennial style out to resonate. For once, the past looks like the future! This spectacle unfolded before a very select audience and was an iconic moment in contemporary fashion. Catherine Deneuve, Léa Seydoux, Julianne Moore, Natalia Vodianova, and Jaden Smith were all among the brand’s invitees.
