In the beginning, there were the Saturnian shapes of poet Jean Cocteau. After dreaming them up, he inspired his friend Louis-François Cartier to create an original piece: a “triply Saturnian” ring with three rings of platinum, red gold, and yellow gold. Upon its creation in 1925, the Trinity Ring by Cartier was dubbed “3 rings 3 gold”. Cocteau would call Cartier a subtle magician, capable of fitting “the moon in pieces on the sun in a thread”. That’s because this ring’s mystery is true. Composed of three inexplicably embedded rings, the ring is composed like a skein, worthy of a brain teaser. Three gold rings, but each a different color. Interlaced, they immediately bring to mind traditional Russian rings. Fifty years after its creation, the ring was mass produced in three sizes. No surprise: the piece, that would be definitively renamed Trinity in 1998, is adorned with the aura of love to become the absolute symbol of it. A ring that is said to have been secretly used by homosexual couples at first, now more and more claimed by heterosexual ones.
So many ingredients explain how this ring has traversed time. In the collective conscious, it delivers first and foremost a universal message of love, that of a man, Jean Cocteau, for his lover. With interposed symbols, the jewel incarnates entanglement, attachment, and finally the specious complexity of loving. The symbolic reigns supreme: a white gold ring could be considered to be the bride’s white dress. A pink or red gold one to trace the rose, symbol of love. Finally, the yellow gold ring incarnates the man, or by extension, the groom. It is a must-have, releasable on-demand, just like its interpretations. Trinity is, more broadly, three golds: yellow for fidelity, pink for love, and grey for friendship. Just as mysterious as it is harmoniously interlaced, Trinity can be summed up as a piece of jewelry for the greatest of loves.
