Martin Scorsese is one of the major directors of the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition presented at the Cinémathèque française and its catalog pay tribute to the totality of his work and show to what extent his artistic approach has had a lasting influence on American cinema, even today. His films are often set in New York City, particularly in the heart of Little Italy, where Scorsese grew up, surrounded by other Italian immigrants. He films characters from this urban microcosm (Goodfellas, Raging Bull), in which violence plays a central role, as well as the spiritual search. Whether in his psychological thrillers, musicals, experimental films or costume films, it is always with mastery that the destiny of his characters (his muses Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio) embodies powerful existential issues, giving his feature films the form of contemporary tragedies. The exhibition catalog, richly illustrated with emblematic photos and rare documents, accompanies the major “Martin Scorsese” exhibition, the complete retrospective of his films, conferences, meetings organized at the Cinémathèque française, and multiple cross-organizational initiatives with numerous partners over several months. A never-before-seen interview with Martin Scorsese and numerous testimonies from his closest collaborators, including Leonardo DiCaprio, allow us to delve into the filmmaker’s sources of inspiration and discover his working methods. A Scorsese event for the general public that will be promoted by a massive communication campaign deployed on all media and throughout France. Finally, the book will be published at the same time as the release and promotion of Silence, Martin Scorsese’s new film adapted from the novel by Shushako Endo.
