Mumm, saga familiale et industrielle, durant un siècle, de Reims à New York en passant par Francfort. En Allemagne, la famille Mumm von Schwarzenstein produisait un vin pétillant fort réputé, le Sekt de Johannisberg. La maison Mumm de Reims fut créée en 1827. En 1914, elle était le 3e producteur de champagne. La déclaration de guerre sonne le glas de la puissance des Mumm. Bien que désireux de rester en France, car non mobilisable, Hermann est arrêté puis soupçonné d’espionnage, tandis que Walther, retourné en Allemagne, est mobilisé dans l’aviation allemande.
Durant toute la guerre, la société de Reims est mise sous séquestre. Elle est vendue aux enchères en 1920 par l’Etat français. Un certain Alaric d’Ornhjelm l’achète sous couvert d’une nouvelle entreprise, la Société des vignerons de Champagne (S. V. C.). Pendant plus de vingt ans, cette acquisition sera à l’origine d’une lutte sans merci avec la famille Mumm à propos de l’utilisation des marques Mumm.
