The Suzanne Lenglen cup got the name of an iconic tennis player – the one that we called « la Divine ».
If France’s oldest jeweller, Mellerio dits Meller, is behind the Coupe des Mousquetaireswhich rewards the men’s singles champion at Roland Garros – the jeweller was indeed inspired by the suzann Lenglen cup.
Suzanne Lenglen: La Divine
If the Suzanne lenglen (1899-1938) name is so important in world tennis it is because the champion the champion has revolutionised the game and the style. On the court, the one that played in skirt from the Patou firm was impressive because of her physical and dexterous game. A tennis game that was easily lent to men at the time.
But the first champion and international tennis star very quickly did not care about the place she was assigned as a woman. During her career, the Frenchwoman will impose her style of play until she sets impressive records…
Never one to give up power, flexibility or grace, Suzanne Lenglen won a total of 241 tournaments, two Olympic gold medals and a string of nearly 171 consecutive victories!
She won Wimbledon six times and the French Open six times, which became Roland Garros in 1927.
It’s hardly surprising, then, to see this same tournament pay tribute to him around the second most important court in the Roland Garros stadium… And an eponymous cup!
The Roland Garros Cup
Possibly the most desired award in women’s tennis is the Suzanne Lenglen Cup. . Since 1979, this trophy is awarded to the winner of the women’s singles – and the trophy is directly inspired by a cup given to Suzanne Lenglen by the city of Nice at the time.
Kept in the national sports Museum, It was this cup that inspired the jeweller Mellerio dits Meller when, in 1981, the FFT commissioned him to make a cup for these gentlemen!
La divine thus bequeaths her panache and aplomb to the Roland Garros Trophy. A trophy that crowns athletes in her footsteps… On clay, multiple champions Steffi Graff, Monica Seles, Justine Henin, Chris Hevert and Serena Williams – all of whom have lifted the coveted trophy!
