Philosophie de la mode

Author : Georges SIMMEL
Publishing House: Allia
Publication Date: January 2, 2020
Description :Stilettos, Marc Jacobs neoprene sweatshirt, flowing chiffon mini-shorts, low bun. Fashion is original in that it gives no practical use to useful things, in this case to put on shoes and protect oneself from the cold. It is fundamentally arbitrary. And this is how it exercises its empire for Simmel. It is not a vital need but a social need. Or, rather, it results from two contradictory social needs: the instinct to imitate and the instinct to differentiate. The man shows in the choice of his clothes his belonging to a group. He adapts himself through them to the role assigned to him by the community in which he lives. But at the same time, he feels the need to differentiate himself, to accuse in the heart of the society his individuality. To adopt a style of another community, it is from the start to detach itself from its group of origin. Because of the variety of its contents, the fashion of today affirms its singularity compared to those of yesterday and tomorrow. But it does so all the better because it marks the difference of classes. According to Simmel, the middle class would be the most sensitive to its whims. Quick to change, it recognizes itself in what is the motor of fashion: to create a present that is constantly changing, like any commodity.

With his slightly more ethereal silhouettes, Marc Bohan left behind designs that are as sophisticated as they are timeless. And this book sheds new light on that period – a period documented and explained in the words of Jérôme Hanover, Christian Dior’s Director of Publications.

Publisher: Fourth Estate Ltd
Publication Date: 2020
Description : During André Leon Talley’s first magazine job assisting Andy Warhol at Interview , a fateful meeting with Karl Lagerfeld began a decades-long friendship and propelled Talley into the upper echelons by virtue of his shared knowledge and adoration of fashion. He moved to Paris as bureau chief of John Fairchild’s Women’s Wear Daily , befriending fashion’s most important designers. But as Talley made friends, he also made enemies. A fraught encounter with a member of the house of Yves Saint Laurent sent him back to New York and into the offices of Vogue under Grace Mirabella. There, he developed an unlikely but intimate friendship with Anna Wintour, and as she rose to the top of Vogue‘s masthead, Talley became the most influential man in fashion. The Chiffon Trenches is a candid look at the who’s who of the last fifty years of fashion, and proof that fact is always fascinatingly more devilish than fiction. André Leon Talley’s engaging memoir tells the story of how he not only survived but thrived – despite racism, illicit rumors and all the other challenges of this notoriously cutthroat industry – to become one of the most legendary voices and faces in fashion.
