Employing every bit of her savvy rigor, Phoebe Philo uses looped fabrics to concoct coats that seem to be made like cocoons. This texture produces a soft and ideal geometric volume; the coat, what with its loose hems, rounded lines, and knee-length, sums up all of Philo’s signatures: comfort and structure. Moreover, the coat disposes of a strange motif. Gone is the Scottish classic; here, the English designer is playing with the mythic plaid design from the multicultural bag, multicultural and multifunctional as ever. The result: the top part takes an ordinary aura, tracing daily life. It’s enough to de-dramatize an oh-so-powerful piece with perfection.
