A perfect incarnation of the concept of fusion that’s so near and dear to Hublot, the Big Bang’s iconic design, big time prizewinner and icon of modern watchmaking, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The term Big Bang may immediately draw to mind the fortuitous formation of the universe, but Hublot ties it to the essential idea of the art of fusion: the association of objects and materials that are never found together in the natural state of things. Like rubber and gold that, through their difference, make the Big Bang that much more special. While they never meet in everyday life, the Big Bang unites these elements in an arresting contrast the confers the impression of bringing the past and the future together. Carbon and gold, ceramic and steel, denim and diamonds… Hublot never ceases to surprise, even more so when the manufacturer exposes the boldness of these associations through a casing composed like a triptych including a number of different components. With its some 70 elements, the Big Bang incarnates the idea of luxury: a timepiece that distinguishes itself with a wide variety of subtle refinements. The Première Big Bang Unico Haute Joaillerie by Hublot is presented as an exceptional creation, with the elaboration of its pieces necessitating three different and complex encrusting techniques: an invisible encrusting, a ‘clou de Paris’ encrusting, and a track encrusting.
Unique with the complexity of its elaboration, Hublot is today unveiling three new styles of the Big Bang Unico “10 Years” Haute Joaillerie. For the first time at Hublot, the bezel is invisibly incrusted with upside down trapezoids – a very complicated affair since there is absolutely no material between the rods. And, just to allow young designers to dream, to innovate, and to affirm themselves, Hublot created the Hublot Design Prize, a first launched just for this exceptional anniversary. In June, a jury composed of confirmed talents in contemporary design – Pierre Keller, Lapo Elkann, Ronan Bouroullec, Marva Griffin Wilshire, and Dr. Peter Zec – will designate their choice creation that, just like the Big Bang, will no doubt be audacious and creative in equal measure. The prize itself will be awarded during Tokyo Design Week next October.
