The new Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional Silver Snoopy Award celebrates the anniversary of the Apollo 13 rescue mission. It’s only natural then that the background displays a 925 silver Snoopy medallion – Snoopy, NASA’s mascot and guardian angel of the Apollo 13 mission. The timepiece functions with an Omega 1861 caliber – a manually-rewinding chrono that offers 48 hours of reserve life – all set on the wrist with a nylon bracelet. But the novelty resides in the immaculate white color. The Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award actually has a white dial thanks to Charles Schulz and his Snoopy creation, originally pencilled in black and white.
The design for this limited edition Speedmaster sought to integrate the same color scheme to bequeath its icon with the very essence of Snoopy. The result is a dial that’s harmoniously divided between the white backgorund and the black of the ceramic bezel’s indexes. Moreover, the Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award lends itself to reflection upon perceiving the inscription: “What could you do in 14 seconds?” This is because, when it was time to come back to Earth, the astronauts decided to replace the broken equipment with their Speedmaster. That’s how they were able to track the exact time it took to ignite the capsule’s rockets – 14 seconds – in order to be able to enter into the atmosphere without wasting the energy that was, at that exact moment, at a critical level. This is how the Speedmaster first entered into history in 1970.
