Chanel Tweed: Homage to signature pattern at FW 2022

Virginie Viard has made Chanel tweed the common denominator of the entire Fall/Winter 2022 collection — Coco Chanel’s favorite material, inspired by the Duke of Westminster.

It was in the heart of the Grand Palais Éphémère that the long-awaited fashion show of the brand took place – a place decorated for the occasion with the purpose to evoke the surroundings of the Tweed river, in Scotland… In memory of the young Coco Chanel, who was then on vacation with her lover the Duke of Westminster, the aesthetic narrative of the Chanel collection Chanelwinter 2022. A collection in which we find Chanel tweed incorporated into new, pop and winter versions! Virginie Viard explains…

“Devoting this entire collection to tweed is an obvious tribute. We walked in the footsteps of Gabrielle Chanel, along the River Tweed, to imagine tweeds in the colors of this landscape. Similar to a long pink coat speckled with blue and purple, or even a burgundy suit finely iridescent with gold. This is what Gabrielle Chanel did during her walks in the Scottish countryside: she picked ferns and bouquets of flowers to inspire local artisans with the shades she desired.”

It is a photo of Gabrielle Chanel, dressed in the clothes of the Duke of Westminster, which greatly inspired the creative director of the brand. A photo in which Coco Chanel appears in an oversized hunting coat and rubber boots, necessarily too big since they belonged to the Duke of Westminster.

Slightly oversized jackets, black velvet pants, or even tight skirts worn with high socks… For winter 2022, Chanel tweed is thus worn with silhouettes inspired by this ensemble borrowed from the Duke – and who Virginie Viard confirms: “There is nothing sexier than wearing the clothes of the person you love. I am fascinated by this ever-contemporary gesture.”
