The advent of auctioneers in the heart of a Paris that was in the process of a Haussmanienne transformation undermined the inadequately sized Etienne Marcel auction house. And so the Compagnie parisienne immigrated to the Quartier de la Bourse and, in 1850, acquired the former mansion of Pinon de Quincy. On June 1st, 1852, from the blueprints of architects Lejeune and Levasseur, the H\u00f4tel Drouot was ready for construction. The space was spread over 14 rooms, divided into 2 floors. During the hotel\u2019s glory days, its walls would be home to a number of exceptional collections. The sale of the Crown jewels, the furnishings from Emile Zola\u2019s residence, or that of great couturier collector Jacques Doucet. The year 1951 was its centennial. Just for the occasion, a ceremony was organized in the presence of Vincent Auriol, President of France. The Mobilier National presented a number of jealously conserved pieces, notably a tapestry depicting Louis XIV on a visit to the royal manufacturer in les Gobelins. The success was so great that the Compagnie des commissaires-priseurs de Paris decided to rethink the location entirely.<\/p>\n
While the renovation and modernization of the buildings on rue Drouot was underway, the auction house took up quarters in the old Orsay train station. Entrusted to Jean-Jacques Fernier and Andr\u00e9 Biro, the building, inaugurated in 1980, boasted a unique silhouette, a sort of \u201csurrealist reinterpretation of Haussmannienne architecture.\u201d Indeed, by reusing a part of the original building\u2019s metal frame, the work transformed into a spearhead for contemporary architecture; an authentic turntable of the French art market that shone at home and abroad. Located at 9 rue Drouot, the H\u00f4tel Drouot Richelieu has anchored itself as Paris\u2019 primary auction house. 16 auction halls in which the biggest names in haute couture once came together, from the 40s to the 80s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
