From May 11th to May 18th, “Journées de la Mode” (or “Fashion Days”) will take place in Oran, Algeria, assembling French and Algerian designers while focusing on the illustrious YSL.
Talking about YSL in Oran is a bit like returning to his roots, a trip through the city where he for whom “dressing is a way of life” was born and raised. From August 1st, 1936 until he was 19 years old, YSL grew up in Oran before coming to Paris to begin working with Christian Dior.
Then, he rose up and created his own couture house with his partner Pierre Bergé in 1962. Just for this fashion rendezvous, organized by the Institut Français of Algeria, he will be coming back to give a conference on the life and work of the couturier as well as the legacy he left the fashion world with.
YSL means the invention of iconic pieces that made women modern starting in the 60s: the peacoat, the trench coat, the “smoking”, the safari jacket, and the pants suit all breathed a breath of dynamism and liberty into the female wardrobe. A photo exhibit and the film “Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé: L’amour Fou” will complete this retrospective. A wonderful homage to the eternal companion of the artist for whom “Chanel gave women freedom. Yves Saint Laurent gave them power.”
