Some houses are founded on a gesture rather than a silhouette: to fold, to protect, to carry. Long before runways and flagship windows, French luxury was a matter of luggage, itineraries and trunks strapped to the roofs of carriages, at a time when departure still resembled an expedition and the quality of a case decided the state of a wardrobe on arrival. It is into that restless France that Louis Vuitton steps in 1854, opening his first shop at 4 rue Neuve-des-Capucines, a few paces from Place Vend\u00f4me, and founding a maison that has been turning the constraints of travel into an art of living ever since.<\/p>

That heritage has an address of its own. In 1859 Louis Vuitton acquired land at Asni\u00e8res-sur-Seine to build his workshop; the family made it their home in the 1870s, and the site remains the beating heart of the house’s trunk-making craftsmanship, extended since 2015 by La Galerie, the heritage space set between the Art Nouveau villa and the ateliers. One hundred and seventy years on, the maison is led by Pietro Beccari, its chief executive since February 2023, while its women’s collections are designed by Nicolas Ghesqui\u00e8re, artistic director since November 2013. In 2026 the Monogram turns one hundred and thirty \u2014 a fitting moment to read the lineage of a signature, one piece at a time.<\/p>\n\n

Louis Vuitton Trianon trunk, the founding gesture<\/h2>

The maison’s first iconic creation is not a bag but a trunk. Louis Vuitton rethought its very structure, abandoning the domed lid inherited from horse-drawn coaches in favour of a flat top dressed in Trianon grey canvas. The result was lighter, more resilient and, crucially, stackable \u2014 a quiet revolution in the age of railways and ocean liners, when usable volume had become a science.<\/p>

Even the canvas name reveals the house’s culture: the grey, first known simply as ordinary, borrowed its tone from the shades of imperial residences. The entire Louis Vuitton vocabulary is already present \u2014 a technical answer elegantly dressed, a material conceived for real use, a beauty born of constraint. Every piece that follows descends from that grammar.<\/p>\n\n

Louis Vuitton Damier canvas, the graphic signature<\/h2>

In 1888 came the Damier canvas, a brown-and-tan checkerboard on which the house’s name appeared on the outside of a trunk for the first time, and discreetly at that. It succeeded the striped canvas of 1872 and answered a clear intention: to make a Louis Vuitton trunk instantly recognisable. The motif introduced an idea that would run through the century \u2014 here, protection and ornament are drawn by the same hand.<\/p>

Louis Vuitton Monogram, the universal emblem<\/h2>

The Monogram was born in 1896 from a drawing by Georges Vuitton, the founder’s son, four years after Louis’s passing. Interlaced initials meet floral and star motifs drawn from Art Nouveau, Japonisme and neo-Gothic ornament; the design was registered on 11 January 1897 and has scarcely changed since.<\/p>

Originally woven on a jacquard loom with natural linen threads, the pattern carried a subtle relief, almost a watermark. One hundred and thirty years later it remains one of the few emblems in luxury recognisable without a legible logotype \u2014 proof, if any were needed, that a well-conceived motif reads faster than a name.<\/p>

Louis Vuitton Steamer Bag, the first softness<\/h2>

At the turn of the century the maison created its first soft, foldable bag. Designed to sit in the lower compartment of the Wardrobe Trunk during transatlantic crossings, the Steamer Bag held the traveller’s linen. Almost incidentally, it opened the entire chapter of modern Louis Vuitton leather goods: a container that follows movement rather than framing it.<\/p>

Louis Vuitton Keepall, travel made lighter<\/h2>

Unveiled in 1930 under the name Tientout, the Keepall translated that shift into a wardrobe object. First made in canvas and leather, later in Monogram canvas and the house’s signature materials, it offered a supple, generous piece of luggage to be filled without ceremony. Its line has never required correction: a departure bag that became an everyday one.<\/p>

Louis Vuitton Speedy, elegance at pace<\/h2>

Created in the 1930s as the Express and later renamed Speedy, the model was designed by Gaston-Louis Vuitton for an era captivated by velocity. Reimagined in Monogram canvas in 1959, it left the world of cabin luggage to become a handbag, and found in Audrey Hepburn its most celebrated advocate. Few pieces explain so clearly how this house moves an object from the platform to the pavement without erasing where it came from.<\/p>

Louis Vuitton No\u00e9, celebration carried<\/h2>

The No\u00e9, designed by Gaston-Louis Vuitton in 1932, answered a brief of delightful precision: to carry bottles of champagne. The bucket shape, the drawstring closure and the generous capacity all follow from it. Dressed in Monogram canvas in 1959 and reinvented since in vivid colours and multiple sizes, it retains a composed festivity that sets it apart from any other soft bag.<\/p>

Louis Vuitton Alma, architecture in leather<\/h2>

Conceived in the 1930s, the Alma owes its presence to geometry: a wide base, structured sides, a clean upper arch. It is one of the rare leather pieces that stands unaided, like a small building, and it holds that posture thanks to trunk-making expertise rather than to fashion. Its Parisian name settled it permanently within the house’s landscape.<\/p>

Louis Vuitton Capucines, a tribute to the address<\/h2>

Introduced in late 2013, the Capucines takes its name from rue Neuve-des-Capucines, home to the very first shop of 1854. Worked entirely in leather and stripped of ornament, it asserts another facet of the savoir-faire: here the maison demonstrates its command of hides, far from the canvases that made it famous. The homage looks back; the execution is resolutely of today.<\/p>

Louis Vuitton Petite Malle, heritage in miniature<\/h2>

For his first collection at Louis Vuitton, shown in 2014, Nicolas Ghesqui\u00e8re chose to shrink the trunk to the scale of a shoulder bag. Reinforced corners, an S-lock clasp, crisp edges: the Petite Malle quotes the founding object literally and ushers it into evening dress. It is the most elegant demonstration of the principle governing this entire selection \u2014 modernity here means rereading the workshop, never leaving it behind.<\/p>
