As the US Open Tennis Championships takes place in Flushing Meadows Park till 12 September 2021, we are now coming back to the fourth and last Grand Slam tournament!

After the Australia Open, the Stade Roland Garros, and the Wimbledon championship, the US Open is the fourth and the last level of the annual Grand Slam Tennis Championship…

US Open: Itinerant Tournament Since 1978

The history of the US Open starts in 1881. In Newport Casino de Rhode Island, the National Lawn Tennis Association of the United States organizes a national competition that was first played on the lawn! The change of the coating of the surface, which is now iconic for Wimbledon, continued from 1881 to 1974.

By 1974, in the meantime, the tournament took the name of the US Open; in 1968 took place on the clay court. And here it is, the inherent coating in Roland Garros does not really appeal…

In 1978, a fast hard-court surface called DecoTurf has become to be used at the US Open Tournament. That year, the US Open, itinerant until that time, finally decides to settle in Flushing Meadows Park permanently.

1968 marks also the first US Open edition as we know it now — professionals and amateurs are invited to compete together. Arthur Ashe and Virginia Wade became the first champions of the US Open.

The main court at the US Open was consequently named the Arthur Ashe Stadium — a 22,000-seated arena where champions from all over the globe have tennis competitions…

US Open: The Emblematic Champions

Many breath-taking matches were held at the US Open, but three of them will be mentioned here.

A spectacular final between to titans of tennis — Bjorn Borg versus John McEnroe in 1981. If the path of these outstanding players is revealed on the pages of great, specifically selected here books by Icon-Icon, the final will be more than just a word!

Memorable for what it has already shown… The victory of John McEnroe in four sets… John McEnroe, 22-years-old, played with Bjorn Borg, 25-years-old. Steffi Graf appeared to become the fifth player (and the third woman) closing the Grand Slam having won Gabriela Sabatini at the final of the US Open in 1988. Four major plays titles were given that year — but no one was able to finish the Grand Slam since then.

In 2009 known for an unexpected loss maintained in the history of the US Open. Roger Federer won the trophy in the men’s singles tournament in 2004 for the first time – thus, introducing a series of exciting victories in New York. Roger Federer claimed the title at the US Open 5 times in a raw. That was the domination that was not overturned for a while… Until Federer hit a sang – Del Potro.

The 20-years-old player ranked No. 7 – Juan MartĂ­n Del Potro was playing his first final with Roger Federer, who got used to final games and victories. The 17th final, the 18th Grand Slam tournament; with 15 great titles claimed… Federer was favored to win.

The first surprise came when Federer, who had won the first set rather routinely, let 5-4, 30-0 lead slip away in the second set –being, actually, overturned by Juan Martín Del Potro.

Nevertheless, Federer is going to beat Del Porto in the 7th time… Leading 5-4 in the fourth set and having a 15-30 lead on Del Potro’s serve… Federer could not close this match out.

Federer was not the only one giving a win to Juan MartĂ­n Del Potro in 2009. But, even more unexpected, a cold-blooded Swede has lost his temper … giving rise to some amazing images!
