A memory of the flamboyant era where Elsa Schiaparelli brought surrealist art into the fashion world, the brand’s new creative director enjoys using references from this apogee. With longer lines and modernized concepts, Bertrand Guyon is playing in “Elsa’s theater”. With experience at Valentino and as Hubert de Givenchy’s first assistant, Bertrand Guyon is signing off on a dramatic first collection that’s full of fantasy. He made Elsa’s signature fuchsia color the connecting thread of his surrealist reinterpretations. And this reinterpretation can perfectly be summed up in a single topsy turvy top.
“It’s a balance between simplicity and extravagance.” In fact it’s an equation of modern design, traditional cuts, and fabric complexion. The Shocking Top plays with contrasts, just like surrealism plays with trompe-l’oeil and dreams. The sweater becomes an ascot blouse with bouffant sleeves attached to a fur body. Pink, of course! Even better, instead of designing a couture collection doomed to be inaccessible and over-the-top, Bertrand Guyon played with bringing a more ready-to-wear, or ready-to-couture- rather, collection to the runway.
