When Martin Margiela was active in the 90s, the artist took particular interest in turning one man’s cheap into everyone’s treasure; taking mottled objects from flea markets, Martin then transformed them into clothing for an egalitarian intelligentsia that liked playing with contentious undertones and subtle jabs in the fashion realm. In other words, do-it-yourself in the purest French tradition. For next season, Maison Martin Margiela is far from denying its past and, in a collection with Japonic accents, presents their vision for Haute Couture.

This philosophy is perfectly incarnated in a long patchwork skirt labeled MMM. Spectacular in that it seems so rudimentary, it’s composed of what appear to be bits and pieces of a defunct couture embroidery workshop. Sequins, pearls, and floral prints where psychedelic elements are arranged to represent an exquisite body of fashion. The edges are blunt; the finishings are not. By picking through, restoring, transforming, and zooming in on an old aesthetic in arresting new garments, the Maison Martin Margiela is forging their own haute couture out in left field.
