The keyword here is geisha; indeed, this just about sums up Prada’s Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Fashion photographer Steven Meisel, known for his dark, provocative vision, is the one who’s immortalized a number of models such as Irina Kravchenko, Eza Herzigova, and Saskia de Brauw. A bold choice for Prada, who is trying to immortalize their collection as well by being in perfect harmony with the photographic universe.

Somewhere between modernity and tradition, this collection is abounding in Japonic surprises: reworked kimonos, Japanese-style sandals, structured coats inspired by hakamas, the seven-pleated pants worn by the nobles of medieval Japan… Japanese influence can be found in the cut, the predominance of silk in all its many shapes and sizes, and in the choice of dark and pearly pink shades. It is further marked by a touch of femininity in the presence of flowers, bringing a poetic aspect to the collection.

This very same poetic aspect is brought up by Miucca Prada, who affirms that “it is forbidden to dream, nostalgia is forbidden, being sweet isn’t well viewed. The clothing in this collection are the illustration of this impossible dream: the dream of finding these sentiments that we aren’t allowed to love anymore today.”

This collection is complimentary because it is representative of all that is soft and sweet, all while calling out to female dreamers everywhere. Moreover, its dark colors and asymmetrical cuts give it a bold avant-gardism. Silk, asymmetry, flowers… this is what Spring 2013 will bring. At the height of luxury, Prada is also advocating for fur this summer! Miucca Prada is revisiting the Geisha, with her plain complexion and explosively red lips, in a modern, chic way, unique to Prada’s telltale Femme Fatale image.
