Ever since his arrival at the head of Lacoste’s creative direction in 2011, Baptista has never hesitated to dig deep into the brand’s heritage to set the tone for his collections. For Winter 2015, he’s taken on the idea of accentuating a deconstruction of Lacoste’s classics in order to reconstitute their iconic aura. In this new world, Baptista reminds us of something important: it was René Lacoste who largely contributed to the emergence of sportswear. During New York Fashion Week, it’s on model Sam Rollinson that we discovered this newest interpretation of the iconic Lacoste polo, and with her, the soon-to-be famous expression “René did it first!”. “Tennis in winter” and “touch of the Tenenbaums” also inspired Felipe Oliveira Baptista’s new collection. Frivolously playing with contrasts, the designer is able to give a light-hearted and ultra-modern aspect to the traditional polo.
The brand’s icon is definitely revitalized upon contact with a more crisp cut that, in the women’s department, is imbued with a 70s effect that tacks the polo closer to the body this season. A very desirable piece who’s simplicity invites us to contemplate everything that went into its conception. A mottled grey, graphic writing, and voilà: a fanciful update in the making. And yes, the crocodile has also changed locations, taking off from the chest to park itself on the collar that otherwise remains unchanged. One thing is certain at Lacoste: René is back !
