Born from Coco Chanel’s desire for simplicity and practicality, the 2.55 is a veritable symbol of liberty. Inspired by the way she wore her binoculars on the racetrack, hands in her pockets, the 2.55 nonetheless preserves all the brand’s codes of elegance and refinement. From the time of its launch, it was already picked up by icons of the day like Jackie Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor. This cult classic may have more or less preserved its look since its initial creation, but the 2.55 has been revisited a number of times, notably by Karl Lagerfeld in the 80s, who replaced the Mademoiselle clasp with the famous intertwined “C” logo. This modification helped the bag assume its rightful place as a timeless classic. A true “it bag”, it’s been adorned with nails, tweed, or unexpected colors in various limited editions. Its latest notorious makeover was in 2005, for the fiftieth anniversary of its creation: a chain-link strap made of gold or silver was added, removing any traces of leather from previous strap models.
A must-have for any fashionista, the 2.55 has definitively traversed the eras and remains hands down a timeless classic. Just one question remains: what will be its new look for its sixtieth birthday?
