The striped sweater came into the world on March 27, 1858, but it took until summer 1962 for a certain Yves Saint Laurent to give it his magic touch. In that summer, he was the first to create a number of extremely elegant outfits inspired by this casual and retro nautical piece. In 1966, the artist’s genius led him to bring this work garment down the haute couture catwalk for his summer collection, alongside striped and sequined dresses.

Now the trick up Hedi Slimane’s sleeve is to give the striped sweater an iridescent sophistication… In 2014, the YSL striped sweater is getting decked out with the the rebellious DNA of their founder to draw on all the energy of a contemporary icon. Slimane’s work at Saint Laurent often nods to the 70s. This is a new way to adopt the sweater into a rock’n’roll aesthetic, with the intriguing reflections of a thousand sparkles guiding the way.
