Two of Madonna’s famous cone bras, which are actually technically corset tops, were put up for auction on Wednesday, October 3 at Christie’s in London. The two cones are stitched into the garment’s body, made of green and white silk, and are accompanied by multiple hand-sewn sequins and beaded fringes. Indeed, the Queen of Pop’s cone bras still fascinate us; their presentation at the auction was an emotional one to say the least.

Designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier for the material girl’s Blond Ambition Tour, this undergarment-turned-overgarment has become an iconic signature of the couturier.

Directly inspired by his dress-corset, first presented in 1984 and reissued in his 1990 “Barbès” collection, the cone bra is the incarnation of the designer’s out-of-the-box style. With Gaultier’s pieces, the female body is enhanced by a wise combination of the old and the new, topped off by a dash of astute humor. The end result usually falls somewhere between flashy and glamorous.

The couturier has previously opened up about his fascination for this true object of desire: “I’ve admired corsets ever since I was small. As a child, my grandmother brought me to an exhibit, and a corset was on display. I immediately liked the flesh-like light pink shade, the salmon colored satin, the lace.” Fetishism and historical significance aside, the Gaultier cone bra corset is a revealing look into the very heart of the sensual essence of womankind.
