Solstiss seems to be living out its own Roaring 20s. After embroidering Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen dress with one of the most delicate laces for her 2011 wedding, the French lace manufacturer is now participating in the creation of the costumes for Baz Luhrmann’s film “The Great Gatsby”.
Just like Gatsby’s soirées, the costumes for the Baz Luhrmann film will surely bring the spectator into a whirlwind of feathers, rhinestones, and pearls, all as delicate as they are spirited. Catherine Martin, the woman behind the man that is directing this film adaptation of the book, had a field day with transcribing all the wild effervescence and Art Deco of the 20s for the screen. The head costumier decided to collaborate with Solstiss, French lace company in business since 1879. Slender chiffon dresses saw themselves topped off with lace from the French master, becoming a labyrinth of floral and geometric motifs on the fragile shoulders of Carey Mulligan.
Enriched with crystals, sequins, and ribbons, the costumes serve as a metaphor for the effervescence and insouciance of the Roaring 20s as the film progresses. 1,400 meters of lace and 210 different designs were produced by this French company for the film’s needs. Uniting savoir-faire and on-point innovation, this company received the illustrious title of Enterprise of Living Heritage in 2011, a special distinction for French companies demonstrating excellence in their traditional and industrial skills. Proof that French savoir-faire is always at its solstice!
