Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2016 runway took place in a warehouse transformed just for the occasion into a winter garden. The ground, covered with a printed moquette of flowers and snakes, was sprinkled with folding screens and upholstery. Michele wanted this decor to be just like his collection, inspired by a “situationalist derivative”, an amusing exercise that consists of exploring urban spaces. This is how Gucci’s accessories take on a whole new magnitude upon contact with the new girl imagined by Michele – a bit geeky, very girly, and fascinated by all this intellectual, she slips into a look that’s only vintage on the outside.
Yes, this collection harbors a very contemporary style indeed. The Gucci bag talks about itself: revisiting Gucci’s imagery with gusto, the icon is reinvented through its fabric and its shape. The result denoted an urban and simplified glamour, pure in its own graphicness. While loyal followers of the Gucci original will find comfort here in the nods to Guccio’s signatures – red and green stripes, the horsebit transformed into a saddle motif – the new Gucci bag brings memory into a melting pot of colors, prints, and fabrics. This is one way to show that heritage doesn’t necessarily mean conservatism.
