Whether in a ring, a bracelet, or a diadem, feathers have always been part of Chanel’s history. In 1932, three years after the onset of the Great Depression, the mens’ world of Paris’ Place Vendôme was struggling to stay afloat while Chanel was really taking off. Commissioned by the diamond industry to restore diamonds’ image, Coco Chanel whipped up a collection; despite being the only one in her entire career, it’s still going strong today. Modestly titled “Bijoux de diamant” (“Diamond jewelry”), the line was developed around themes that were significant to the Mademoiselle: stars, suns, ribbons, fringes, and finally, feathers. A symbol of liberty, it’s only natural that it was adopted by Coco Chanel as an expression of restrained sophistication who’s fluidity was a key principle and who’s lightness triumphed over ostentation. The soft light of feathers, rings, brooches, and diadems shone over the beauties of the day like owls in a sparkling glimmer.

Ever since, Chanel has kept on jotting down its story with a feathery quill. In 2010, the brand imagined a collection called “Plume” inspired by the original 1932 one. 35 airy pieces were created by the brand’s workshops in addition to the rerelease of the famous “Plume” brooch imagined by Chanel in 1932. Brand new this season, Chanel is unveiling feathers made of precious stones in bracelets, pendants, and rings. Wings covering women in light, the brand’s latest creations are part of a graphic and supple line, still attentive to freedom of movement. This is how the “Plume” bracelet, set with diamonds or dresed up in 19-carat yellow gold has found itself around many a wrist. With the addition of two enlaced feathers, it leans towards highlighting finesse rather than heaviness. The “Plume” collection is in line with the brand’s pure and elegant creative direction, giving wings to the visionary spirit of any who would submit to the sparkle of diamonds.
