Jacobs blew up the fashion scene when in 1992 he showcased his landmark collection. His obsession with rock and roll appeared on the runway in the form of flannel shirts, thermals (his reimagined cashmere), Doc Martens, layers and layers, all being topped off by a small crocheted skullcap. Marc ruled the runway being praised by American Vogue editor in Chief Anna Wintour and having models like Naomi Campbell walk for free (New York Magazine). Grunge fashion became the scene everywhere from the runway to music.
Grunge took over the music scene and in 1992, music critic Simon Reynolds said about Generation X, “There’s a feeling of burnout in the culture at large. Kids are depressed about the future.” Clearly, since they rolled out of bed, wore no makeup, and didn’t take the time to wash their hair. Bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam blasted from the radios and televisions of teens just trying to be rebellious and free.
As 2013 rolls around we are seeing Marc Jacobs prediction come to life! At fashion week in Paris the spring/summer 13′ show gave sight to the return of the bedhead and flannel look. Belgian designer Dries Van Noten showed a stimulating combination of masculine and feminine. He is flirting with the grunge style as he mixes sheer plaids with soft florals. He’s mixing menswear inspirations with boudoir-like sheer layers and ruffles. Women will be messing their hair up on purpose and dressing like they shop at thrift stores (though wearing expensive brands) as the grunge revival takes full effect come automn.
