For the first time in history, Fendi and Versace have collaborated to create a common Fendace collection in which Fendi’s logo meets Versace’s Medusa.
Fendi’s Logo and Versace’s Medusa: The Runway Collection
“In February, after the ready to wear runway, Donatella and I came to dinner here. Silvia and Donatella happened to get on very well with one another, so we decided that it’d be good to have a little fun. It was a design-off: we did Versace and she did Fendi. It’s important to note that these brands are not part of the same fashion group, and that the collaboration was made out of friendship and respect for one another. It was never planned as something with a commercial purpose.”. Kim Jones’ confession after the surprise Fendace show helps shed light on the circumstances of the collection.
A collection where the codes, signature pieces and gimmicks of both houses were mixed in silhouettes that were as pop as they were sexy. Thus, Kim Jones, Fendi’s artistic director, got the chance to rummage through Versace’s archives: “It was mind blowing, there were things I had never had the chance to see with my own eyes.
And when Donatella went through the Fendi archive, she happened to pick out things form the same period as we had, purely by chance. In addition to this, Donatella had never designed for another house, and neither had Silvia, which was interesting to see. However, the reasons for the collaboration are dead simple; we just wanted to make something optimistic and amusing.”
What was the result? The Fun Fur logo of Fendi and the iconic Medusa Versace have been introduced, sublimated, and melted into one another producing crazily stylized garments. In distinguishing colors of houses — brown for Ferndi and neon miami for Versace — the Fendace silhouettes of Spring/Summer 2022 really reflect this spirit.
We noticed the Safety Pin Dress reinterpreted with nappy pins stamped Fun Fur … The Versace bling was also spinning skirts and dresses cut of Oroton mesh — a material designed by Gianni Versace in the 80s to create an illusion as if a person is covered in gold, liquid, and mega-precious. A real fusion of the aesthetic DNA of these two great Italian houses!
“It is the first time in the history of fashion: two designers who have a real creative dialogue that comes from respect and friendship. It led us to switch roles to create these two collections,” declared Donatella Versace.
Sexy, glitzy, and stylish — this first collaboration of Fendi and Versace opens a new door that we would like to keep open!
