It’s been eight years since Chanel made an allusion to the pearl, if only briefly through their jewelry collections. Today, the brand is reinforcing its ties with Mademoiselle Chanel’s favorite accessory. The designer, in her first jewelry collection (1932) “Bijoux de Diamants” said she wanted to “cover women in constellations”. An astral theme was at the center of the collection and sounded out like a refrain in each of the pieces put on display for more than thirty thousand visitors. The lion, another reference point and Gabrielle Chanel’s astrological sign, also started showing up recurrently in her creations. The designer herself declared, “I’m a Leo, and like the lion I take my claws out to prevent myself from getting hurt.” A solar symbol of protection, the lion inspired Mademoiselle Chanel. This historic jewel is intrinsically tied to Chanel’s lexicon. Whether in a Byzantine or a baroque repertoire, the brand is now scrupulously reinterpreting the Mademoiselle’s original style.
The new jewelry collection by Chanel takes up a whole identity, a universe, theme by theme. Brooches, rings, earrings, necklaces, watches… it’s a river of pearls from the four corners of the earth, some of which are impressively large – 19 mm in diameter – that flows by. The precise work that each of the pieces is made with bears witness to a true savoir-faire and conveys a loyal homage to the designer’s inspirations to bring us back to the pomp of an era, the splendor of the imaginary, the sparkle of Chanel’s jewelry.
