In 2001, the Bottega Veneta bag made an appearance in creative director Tomas Maier’s very first runway. “When I imagined the Veneta bag I had the idea to create the extension of a woman.” The idea was simple: a tote bag free of any excessive adornments, cut in an ebony leather. The piece immediately sparked desire with the simplicity of its name and the artisanal savoir-faire of leather breading – Intrecciato, the Italian brand’’s signature, initiated in 1966 by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro. “Anchored in a tradition that associates exceptional materials and artisanal savoir-faire,” the bag is now an evocation and no longer a cry for attention for Tomas Maier.

The profiled tote bag with fluid curves has established itself as the Italian brand’s most iconic bag. The Veneta intertwines artisanship and discretion throughout a particular technique of leather stringing: Intrecciato. It takes at least 77 strips of 10 different hides, worked by 2 artisans for 2 days straight to create a bag. This ancestral savoir-faire consists of hand-braiding thin strips of hide. This bag is manufactured by same two workers in order to obtain an identical, regular, and unique piece of work. It resembles a veritable leather inlaying. “The harmonious shape of the Bottega Veneta bag lends itself to perfection with an infinite number of variations in the materials for a result that’s always extraordinary.” Tomas Maier is right: the black tote bag is suitable for any type of person.

Reinterpreted this year in a limited number of copies, the tote bag is inaugurating spring by completing the men’s wardrobe for the Cruise 2015 collection. Loyal to the philosophy of “no logo”, maximal quality and limited editions, Bottega Veneta is this year proposing messenger bags, duffle bags, tote bags, and towels. Made of tressed leather in colors ranging from light blue to pastel pink, crème or white, they herald the pop minimalism of the season to come. Casual and discrete, the Bottega Veneta tote bag can also break up a color-block look. Good-looking without going over the top.
