“I wanted to merge my personal designer vocabulary, derived from subcultures… But I had to find this balance with Cristóbal’s legacy. After all, it’s haute couture,” says Demna for the Balenciaga Haute Couture Fall 2024 collection, demonstrating his desire to transform and expand the vocabulary of couture.

A tribute to heritage while propelling it into the future — this is evident in the silhouettes of Balenciaga Haute Couture Fall 2024. A dress made of melted plastic bags, a strapless dress in golden aluminum, and mixes of denim and colorful parkas, fusing the old and the new!

“I think it’s essential to introduce other textures into the vocabulary of haute couture, and not just limit ourselves to satin and tulle, at least in my work,” — and this is exactly where Balenciaga Haute Couture takes a new leap.

Demna reinterpreted three-quarter sleeves, cocoon shapes, and elaborate headpieces but replaced Balenciaga’s signature, now academic, fabrics like gazar with materials he loves… Denim, leather, technical tracksuits, and hoodies. By combining them with a dive-suit type of satin, Demna created modern, dynamic sculptural shapes.

This is precisely what is captured in the black nylon piece, evoking Cristóbal Balenciaga’s precious gazar. Created just before the show, this piece of “ephemeral couture” will require assembly by three Balenciaga employees… Merging the vocabulary of haute couture!
