Yes, Deauville, its boardwalks, beaches that inspired Coco Chanel along with other artists… Deauville is the city where it is good to live and be seen and, finally, the ideal place to welcome, every year, great American stars, and the ever more passionate public.
Every year, more than 100 films are presented at three iconic places of this city founded by the Duke of Morny, in the heart of the Belle Epoque. The International Center of Deauville, the Cinema of Casino Barrière, and the Cinema le Morny have welcomed the cinematic revelations of our time… At the same time a bit of funny moments!

For example, in 1980 Danny Kaye opened the festival by getting on all fours on the stage of the Casino cinema. Buzz Aldrin was dressed as an astronaut on Deauville beach. As for the films awarded at the American Film Festival, some of them have marked the history of cinema. September 1965. A young film director suffers the failure of the first film… He, then, drives to Deauville, before falling asleep in his car, on this beach so inspiring… ” I was desperate; so, I took my car and I left at random. In the middle of the night, I arrived in Deauville ( … ). In the early morning, the sun woke me up and I saw a sublime light and in the light, on the beach, at low tide, there was a woman, a dog, and a child (…). It was there, at that time, that I had the first ideas of a man and a woman.” This filmmaker is none other than Claude Lelouch. His innately Deauvillais film, two Oscars, and a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival later left in the minds of men and women all over the world forever!
In 2021, Claude Lelouch chose Deauville American Film Festival to present Love is Better Than Life — the film that would be the Final “clap” of his career marked by success!
The 47th Edition of the Festival will also shine with the novelties and competition of definitely breath-taking films. Johnny Depp is in Deauville to present City of lies, by Brad Furman. Oliver Stone, meanwhile, will defend his documentary, JFK The Investigation. In all, 13 films compete. And the main jury, Charlotte Gainsbourg, will have to decide!
The American Film Festival rewarded finally five prizes during the Awards ceremony… The Grand Prize, the Jury Prize, the Louis Roederer Foundation Reward for Revelation, The Critics’ Reward, given by critics and journalists, and the Public Choise Reward of the Deauville City, as in tribute to the public’s attachment to this Festival which allows them being close to the stars of the big screen.
The aim of this edition is to show the great American filmmaker of tomorrow, while crowning with tributes the greats of yesterday and today.
