The expression “opposites attract” has never rung so true. Generous volumes with a cocoonish allure, color blocking that gives a bit of panache, a fur band to add a soft touch, linear prints for sobriety: this is the recipe for the Céline sweater.

Totally in contrast and opposition, this new winter trend is not something to be done half-way. The oversized fit protectively falls over fragile shoulders at the onset of the cold, the vertical prints give the illusion of being taller, the fur softens your moral compass in these austere times, the colors are lively and chase away the gloominess of winter’s cold.

Somewhere between classic and modern, Phoebe Philo was aiming big for her winter sweaters. She marvelously masters volumes and colors to sweep away the traditional rigidity of the season’s couture. Skimpy tops are over, as is the idea that “close to the body keeps you warm”. Now it’s time to relax, with all the assurance you need to adopt a cool demeanor. The trick is to break up different volumes with tapered, or even slim, garments. An extreme example of mise en abyme, your unstructured silhouette will never seem disillusioned.
